Sleep Aid

Sleep aids can help provide a temporary solution to help get you to sleep. Sleeping aids are usually antihistamine-based medicines that are sedative meaning they make you feel drowsy and help get you to sleep.

Sleeping problems

Almost everyone suffers from disturbed sleep from time to time in their life and this can be due to many reasons for example:

  • Bereavements
  • Changing sleep pattern due to shift work
  • Jet lag
  • Family or financial worries
  • Exams or deadlines
  • A variation from your usual routine

Taking sleeping aids

Sleeping aid medicines containing promethazine or diphenhydramine are available in common brands like Nytol, Nightcalm, Sominex, Phenergan and Careway sleep aid. These medicines are best taken for short-term use for up to 3 days to help with temporary sleep disturbances.

Sleeping aids will cause drowsiness and some sleep aid medicines containing promethazine like Phenergan and Sominex can cause drowsiness the next morning as well.  Sleeping aids containing Diphenhydramine like Nytol and Careway sleep aid are shorter acting and therefore are less likely to cause drowsiness the next morning.

  • Try to establish a regular sleeping pattern and avoid naps.
  • Try and exercise regularly and relaxation techniques
  • Avid caffeine, alcohol and nicotine in the evening
