Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a condition affecting the eyelids and causes symptoms such as red, itchy and swollen lids of the eye. Blepharitis is not usually serious but poor control often leads to other issues like conjunctivitis, cysts and dry eyes.

Blepharitis is usually caused by the irregularity and blockage of oil glands underneath the eyelid. This causes irregular production of oils and often leads to a favourable environment for bacterial growth.

Symptoms

  • Swollen and sore eye lids
  • Red eyelids and red eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Gritty feeling
  • Flakes, crusts around the eyelids and lashes
  • Eyelids sticking together on wake up

Treatment

Blepharitis treatment is mainly around maintenance of a good eye hygiene routine. It can be treated by washing your eyelids daily and sometimes even twice daily to reduce irregularity of the oil glands by clearing any blockage.

  • Soak some cotton wool or a flannel in warm water and place on your eyelids for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Then gently massage your eyes in circular motion for around 20-30 seconds
  • Clean your eyes using a clean flannel, cotton bud or wool.

You can also utilise eye drops for dry eyes and exclusive products made for blepharitis like wipes and cleaning solution like Blephasol and Blephaclean.
